Roboze Carbon PA, as it is a polymeric composite material, has a key role in several sectors because it combines lightness and resistance: thanks to its 138MPa tensile strength, an elastic tensile modulus of 15 GPa and 200°C HDT, Roboze Carbon PA is one of the strongest and most perfoming material in terms of mechanics in the polymer 3D printing industry. PEEK is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer that guarantees the most extreme performances thanks to exceptional mechanical properties, an excellent thermal resistance and a great chemical resistance in high temperature conditions (up to 200°C) and in corrosive environments.
The use of 3D printing in Automotive and Motorsport sector
One of the big challenges of the Automotive and Motorsport sectors is reducing weights with lighter parts, guaranteeing high performance standards of the printed parts. The use of super polymers like PEEK, instead of light alloys, like aluminium, ensures high performance with an additional reduction of weight.
In particular, we chose a motor crankcase as an application solution for metal replacement through the use of Carbon PA and PEEK. First of all, we printed a Carbon PA support with a price that is lower than 10 euro, to replace the same part in aluminium, that costs 50 euro: an evident saving not only in terms of costs, but also in terms of weights and production time.
Moreover, we printed also a cover in PEEK to be positioned in an area with a temperature between 60-80°C and with an high presence of petrol. It is indeed necessary to remember that PEEK, instead of metals, is not affected by corrosion mechanisms, making it ideal for the replacement of the motor crankcase and allowing to drastically reduce maintenance costs, caused by metal’s corrosion phenomena. In particular, PEEK has a great chemical resistance against many liquids, generally used in the automotive sector, like fuels, oils and brake fluid.
